Maybe you’ve decided that you want to take your personal brand to the next level with professional headshots. Or maybe, your company is forcing you to replace that 18-year old headshot you just can’t seem to let go of.

Either way, the hunt for the right photographer can be quite the challenge. And with so many photographers out there, it’s hard to know which one is best suited for the job.

Watch Aliyah Dastour (CEO of Alimond Studio in Leesburg, VA) explain what to look for in a headshot photographer:

#1: They take headshots. All the time.

When scoping out photographers, try your hardest to find someone that specializes in headshot photography. Since a headshot photographer has a deeper understanding of the business world and visual branding, it will be easier for them to create headshots that communicate the right message for you.

They will also look for detail. Ideally, your headshot will have many eyes on it, and you don’t want those eyes focused on anything but your face. The right photographer will give you tips before your session on what to wear, what to bring, and how to prepare yourself. Understanding all the little details will make a huge difference once you see the final product.

#2: They Can Make You Light Up.

Most people dread getting their photos taken. Why? Because most of us hate being in front of the camera – it makes us freeze up and we aren’t able to be ourselves. So, if your photographer can’t get you out of your shell, it makes the experience that much worse.

Much like Aliyah mentioned in the video, the right photographer will light you up. This simply means that they will engage you in conversation, ask about the message you want your headshots to convey and make you feel at ease during your session. As a result, you will feel more comfortable with them and therefore look more personable and relaxed in your headshots.

All in all, your headshot experience should not be one of frustration, but one of excitement! You are finally investing in your personal brand, so make sure that you are investing in a photographer that is equipped to bring your vision to life.
